29-year-old Mats van Huijgevoort once played for Feyenoord, although he didn’t get further than 45 minutes in the 2-1 lost away match against VVV-Venlo in 2012. Yesterday the defender took on SC Feyenoord (2-2) at Varkenoord with his current club Achilles Veen.
“There is no unpleasant word to say about my time at Feyenoord. It was very nice to play for Feyenoord and I’m glad that I reached the first team,” said Van Huijgevoort, who feasted his eyes on the much improved Varkenoord, in conversation with the Brabants Dagblad. “The training complex is very modern. Actually I only recognized the view of the Kuip. There are still some trainers around who trained me and some players I still know.”
In 2015, after playing football for a period at FC Den Bosch, his professional career came to an end and Van Huijgevoort threw himself into a higher professional education study in business administration. “I have no regrets that I have chosen my social career. I only regret it when I see someone on television with whom I played football. Then I think: I could have been there. But I also like working. The first years I played in higher amateur soccer with Kozakken Boys and SV Oss’20. At Achilles Veen I can better combine work and soccer because I only have to train twice a week.”
