DEL2 in Weißwasser: Lausitzer Foxes defeat the Wolves Freiburg with a late goal spectacle

That was a real game of patience – with a happy ending for the Lausitzer Foxes. Weißwasser prevailed on Monday evening in a good game against EHC Freiburg 4:1. Despite the best chances on both sides, the fans had to wait for goals for over 40 minutes. In the last third, however, the hosts found their way to victory thanks to their strong majority game and celebrated an important home win in the DEL2.

Because the foxes remain on the penultimate place in the table. However, they reduce the gap to tenth place to eight points. The fight for the pre-playoffs continues on Friday with the next home game against ESV Kaufbeuren (7.30 p.m.).

“The last third was mainly a matter of the mind. We took advantage of our number chances. The fast 3:1 was very important. I’m happy for the team about this win. Now the players get two days off,” said Füchse coach Petteri Väkiparta.

Lusatian foxes and the fans

While the Lausitzer Füchse still have to fight hard, the guests from Breisgau already have the pre-playoffs and thus direct relegation in the DEL2 as good as certain. The team of former Weißwasseraner coach Robert Hoffmann traveled to Lausitz as the bottom of the table. In addition, EHC Freiburg still has several catch-up games to play.

For the first time in months, the Lausitzer Füchse were allowed to play in front of a larger crowd than last on Monday evening. The updated Corona Emergency Protection Ordinance in Saxony enabled further relaxation in sport. It currently allows a 50 percent hall utilization. The 2G plus rule applies here. 822 visitors watched the game against Freiburg.

They experienced a very intense game from the first minute with many chances to score for both sides – even if there were no goals in the first 20 minutes. But the hosts took coach Petteri Väkiparta’s criticism to heart. After the 1:3 defeat in Bad Tölz on Saturday, the Finn had criticized the duel behavior in clear words. “We weren’t there fighting. We didn’t win a single duel,” explained Väkiparta.

Ritter is missing from the Lusatian foxes

This time the hosts had to do without Toni Ritter as well as long-term injured players such as Captain Clarke Breitkreuz, Jens Baxmann and Korbinian Geibel. The striker was unable to play the day after his 32nd birthday due to a positive corona test and is in quarantine.

Freiburg then increased the pace in the second third. Weißwasser was now much more challenged on the defensive. However, it remained a goalless draw – also thanks to the strong Leon Hungerecker in goal. “So far we’ve had a great game against good opponents, both defensively and offensively. We have to keep going like this, then the puck will go in at some point, ”explained youngster Ilja Fleischmann in the break interview on “Sprade-TV”. Fleischmann scored his first DEL2 goal on Saturday in Bad Tölz.

Late goals for Weißwasser

And the youngster was to be right. Because in the 42nd minute, the Lausitzer Füchse came out on top to make it 1-0 through Bennet Roßmy. He benefited from a great pass from Hunter Garlent. On the first try, Garlent tried a slap shot himself, on the second try he played Rossmy, who hit from close range. And the 2-0 was also in the majority – Hunter Garlent was the template provider again. Peter Quenneville sent the pass into the goal (49′).

But the exciting game was far from over. Because the goal spectacle really started now. First Freiburg came to the goal through Tyson McLellan (51). But just 17 seconds later, Peter Quenneville scored again (3:1/51.). Richard Mueller put the final point behind the goal spectacle in the last third. In the 59th minute he pushed the puck into the empty Freiburg goal to make it 4-1.

Guest coach Robert Hoffmann: “We didn’t really start the game well. We didn’t get proper access. We tried everything but the puck wouldn’t fall. In addition, Leon Hungerecker kept strong. It’s annoying, but there are days like that in sport.”
