JAKARTA, lightning.com – Pluto, was at one point considered the smallest and farthest planet in our solar system, but was officially demoted from planetary status in 2006.
Page worldatlas.com mentions, the decline in status because in fact Pluto does not meet the three criteria needed to distinguish a planet.
The criteria are that the planet must be in an orbit around the Sun; it must have sufficient mass for its own gravity to overcome the force of a rigid body so it is assumed to have a nearly spherical shape, and it must clear the environment around its orbit of other bodies.
Since Pluto does not comply with the third rule, Pluto is considered a ‘dwarf planet’. There are five dwarf planets in our solar system, including Pluto, and they are Ceres, Makemake, Haumea, and Eris.
The outer reaches of the solar system also include the Kuiper Belt, home to four of the five dwarves, and the Oort Cloud, which is thought to surround the entire solar system in a cloud-like shell.
