The smugglers kept the police busy. A wanted smuggler from Iran was arrested in Linz on Friday. On Saturday night, customs officials found a Syrian in Suben (Schärding district) who was supposed to be smuggled across the border.

A Syrian was caught during a check at the Suben border crossing on Saturday night. He had hidden himself in a fully occupied car with nine seats and wanted to be smuggled to Germany unnoticed. However, the customs officials asked all vehicle occupants to get out of the car at the border control. Then they noticed the passenger: He was hiding under several textiles in the area of the second row of seats. The man was a Syrian.
Got into the car as a hitchhiker
He explained that he got into the car at the A1 rest stop in St. Valentin in Lower Austria as a hitchhiker and wanted to go to Germany. The Syrian was arrested and taken to the police prison in Wels by the immigration police. The 32-year-old driver of the vehicle was also arrested and will be reported to the public prosecutor’s office in Wels after the investigation is complete, according to the police.
Convicted smuggler went into hiding in Linz
The police were able to record another case of smuggling as a success on Friday. Investigators from the State Criminal Police Office were on the trail of a 30-year-old Iranian. Hungarian authorities had asked the investigators for help. Because the man had been convicted of smuggling in Hungary, but then went into hiding. The target investigators were able to track down the wanted man in Linz’s Franck district and arrested him without resistance. He was taken to Linz Prison.
