Switch is Nintendo’s best-selling console ever

Nintendo has had a strong sales quarter unlike Sony which has struggled to produce near enough PS5 devices. The successful quarter sends Switch straight to the top of Nintendo’s consoles up to this point, with great help from the newly launched OLED version of Switch.

Sold less than the year before

Thanks to what Nintendo describes as a good start for Switch OLED, total Switch sales add up to 103.54 million units since its launch in 2017. In comparison, the gigantic success of the Nintendo Wii sold 101.63 million copies.

10.67 million Switch units were sold in the third quarter of last year, from October to December.

Despite the record and a relatively good performance considering the circumstances, not everything was joy and gloom for the Japanese gaming giant. Switch sales were down eight percent compared to the previous year, and in the forecasts for the whole year, they estimate that sales will amount to 23 million, one million less than first assumed.

The Pokemon games lead the sales

Nintendo is also doing well on the gaming front so they can also point to good numbers in the software category.

In particular, it is the Pokemón games that generate a lot of revenue. The remaster games “Brilliant Diamond” and “Shining Pearl” have sold just under 14 million units in total in the last nine months, and otherwise Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Party Superstars have sold 7.96 and 5.43 million copies respectively.

“Animal Crossing: New Horizons” has sold 4.99 million copies.
