Barcelona –
Gerard Pique uncover Cristiano Ronaldo almost joined Barcelona. But the transfer did not materialize because CR7 finally chose to Real Madrid.
Pique once teamed up with Ronaldo at Manchester United in the 2004-2008 range. In the summer of 2008, Pique decided to return to Barcelona. He then transformed into a legend of El Barca by playing at the Catalan club until now.
The 34-year-old defender revealed that Ronaldo almost followed in his footsteps to join Barcelona from MU. This happened one year later after Pique moved to Camp Nou in the summer of 2009.
Ronaldo at that time was indeed performing extraordinary with the Red Devils. He made 26 goals and 12 assist in the 2008/2009 season.
However, the transfer was ultimately not realized. Ronaldo chose to leave for Barcelona’s eternal rival, Real Madrid.
Madrid had to spend 94 million euros to redeem Ronaldo from MU. This transfer value made Ronaldo the most expensive player in the world at that time. Pique also said that apart from Ronaldo, Madrid also managed to corner Barcelona in the transfer of Vinicius Junior.
“Cristiano was very close to Barca before he signed for Madrid. Same with Vinicius (Junior),” said Gerard Pique in Ibai’s Twitch channel quoted from Sports Bible.
In Madrid, Ronaldo then transformed into the main mainstay on the front lines. He has scored a total of 450 goals in 438 appearances for Los Blancos. The Portuguese player helped Madrid win two LaLiga titles, two Coppa del Rey titles and four Champions League titles.
Ronaldo played in Madrid for 11 seasons before leaving for Juventus in 2018. The 36-year-old forward then returned to Manchester United at the start of this season.
