In the midst of the threat of the Omicron wave, which is expected to peak at the end of February, Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin conveyed some comforting news. Among the confirmed cases of Omicron, most have mild symptoms.
“Those with severe cases, are in critical condition, need around 8 percent of oxygen,” said Minister of Health Budi at a press conference on the development of PPKM, Monday (31/1/2022).
In addition, the cure rate in the Omicron variant tends to be higher than in the Delta variant. Therefore, the government changed the policy that patients with mild symptoms did not need to be hospitalized.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Health’s COVID-19 vaccination, Dr. Siti Nadia Tarmizi, emphasized that the recent increase in COVID-19 cases was due to the increasing testing capacity. The increase in the positivity rate actually proves a good detection ability.
“This increase in the quota for testing and tracing is a form of early detection efforts in preventing the expansion of transmission, as well as preventing the emergence of new distribution clusters. This is also an effort to detect early symptoms of COVID-19 suffered by each individual,” explained Dr. Nadia .
“This is important to prevent delays in handling cases considering the Omicron variant which has a faster spread but tends to be asymptomatic,” he said.
However, anticipation is still being done. The government said the total availability of COVID-19 treatment beds currently stands at 78,825 and can still be increased to 156,847 beds. In Jakarta alone, the BOR in 196 hospitals is 6,496 out of 13,777 available capacities.
“In the conditions required, the BOR in Jakarta can be conditioned to reach 21,000. So, there is no need to worry too much, the capacity is still quite a lot,” said Dr. Nadia.
