The National Garden Bird Count is organized every year by Vogelbescherming Nederland. Garden bird counters had to count for half an hour in their own environment how many birds they see and report this to tuinvogeltelling.nl.
So far, more than 146,000 participants have counted more than 2 million birds. “Given the strong wind and the mild winter weather, which means that fewer birds can be seen in the gardens, a nice result,” says the Bird Protection. Last year, nearly 200,000 people took part. Data can still be submitted until tomorrow 12.00.

The house sparrow has been the leader in the count for years. “House sparrows live in large groups, which means that this species comes in first place in absolute numbers,” according to the Vogelbescherming. This year, the blue tit is currently in fourth place just below the blackbird. At number five is the jackdaw. At number six follows the finch, at seven the wood pigeon, at eight the magpie, at nine the Collared Dove and at ten the robin.
Merel is scribbling up again
The number of blackbirds in the Netherlands has fallen by 30 percent in recent years, but this year there seems to be a cautious recovery, says a spokesperson for the Bird Protection. “After the outbreak of the usutu virus in 2016, this songbird was only seen in two-thirds of the gardens. Now it concerns three-quarters of the gardens. So it looks favorable for the time being. The coming years will show whether the recovery perseverance.”
