Last week the teams of zoo-refuge La Tanière in Nogent-le-Phaye near Chartres (Eure-et-Loir) embarked on one of their most important rescue missions in Gironde.
They recovered forty-six animals held in a private zoo and subject to legal proceedings with seizure. Each week brings its share of rescues and this time it concerns a very small animal unfortunately the object of many traffics, a ouistiti.
Abandoned in front of a veterinary clinic
“Unfortunately, history repeats itself” says the communication and marketing manager of the zoo-refuge, Sophie Fernandes-Petitot.
A new resident has just made her entrance this week at the refuge designed by Francine and Patrick Violas (see his rant on video).
The little Mishka, a marmoset with white brushes, visibly aged about twenty months, was found abandoned in front of a veterinary clinic in the Puy de Dome on the side of Clermont Ferrand. More than 1000 km round trip for the La Tanière team to recover it.
Beside her was a message: “My name is Mishka, I am a female marmoset born in May 2020… I was in my family who took me in since I was 3 months old… unfortunately, I fell ill . »
A detention that cannot be improvised
Many of these small primates are the subject of trafficking and illegal possession.
We can never repeat it enough: keeping animals of non-domestic species of this type cannot be improvised. It is necessary to hold a certificate of competence, guarantee of a perfect knowledge of the specificities of the animal and its maintenance…
It is indeed necessary to know the anatomy, the biology, the behavior, the handling, food, the installations conditioning the quality of the living environment, the prophylaxis of the diseases, the safety of the people…
In the case of Mishka “like unfortunately most of the small primates that we recover, the deficiencies are numerous”.
The little female is indeed suffering from locomotor disorders which most likely result from dietary deficiencies and a insufficient supply of UV.
The little marmoset will be in quarantine for ninety days before rubbing shoulders with its congeners.
