JAKARTA – Consumption egg yolk believed to trigger high cholesterol . Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in blood. The body needs cholesterol to build healthy cells, but high cholesterol can increase the risk of health problems such as heart disease and stroke.

Several decades ago, large studies linked high blood cholesterol to heart disease. In 1961, the American Heart Association recommended dietary cholesterol restriction. Many other international health organizations are doing the same.

Over the next few decades, worldwide egg consumption declined significantly. Many people replace eggs with cholesterol-free egg substitutes which are considered a healthier option.

Reporting from Healthline, Saturday (29/1/2022) whole eggs (with the yolk) are indeed high in cholesterol. In fact, these foods are a significant source of cholesterol in the standard American diet.

Two large whole eggs (100 grams) contain about 411 mg of cholesterol. In contrast, 100 grams of ground beef 30% fat has about 78 mg of cholesterol. The maximum recommended daily intake of cholesterol is 300 mg per day. That number was even lower for people with heart disease.

Basically, the liver produces large amounts of cholesterol because cholesterol is a necessary nutrient for cells. When you eat more high-cholesterol foods, such as eggs, your liver produces less cholesterol because more of it comes from food.

Conversely, when you get less cholesterol from food, the liver produces more to compensate. Because of this, blood cholesterol levels did not change significantly in most people when they ate more cholesterol from food.

One long-term study found that consuming egg yolks daily for 1 year did not significantly change total cholesterol, bad or good cholesterol, or the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL (an important marker of heart disease risk).

However, one review of studies in healthy individuals found that eating a diet containing cholesterol increased bad cholesterol, but the ratio of bad cholesterol to HDL remained constant compared to a control group.

Likewise, in another study, 30 people who ate 3 eggs per day for 13 weeks had higher total cholesterol, HDL, and bad cholesterol compared to those who only took choline supplements.

However, their HDL to bad cholesterol ratio remained the same. The study authors concluded that eating a high-cholesterol diet regulates the amount of cholesterol the body makes to maintain the ratio of HDL to bad cholesterol.
