What should the new octopus in the Timmendorfer Strand Sealife Center be called? The Sealife staff ask for suggestions and give away a family card for the best one. The campaign marks the start of the anniversary year, as the Timmendorf Sealife Center will be celebrating its 25th birthday in 2022.
Anyone who has three hearts deserves at least one name – and that also applies to the ordinary octopus, which is still quite new to the Timmendorfer Sealife Center. It’s a female animal and both curious and playful, explains Sylvie Böhme, Sealife curator. She reveals more exciting facts about the octopod: “These animals are among the most amazing and versatile creatures in our oceans. They have highly developed nervous systems, are among the most adaptive invertebrates, and their talent for camouflage is unmatched.”
Blue blood, three hearts and an esophagus in the brain
In addition, the octopus has blue blood, three hearts and a gullet that runs through the brain, explains the curator. It is very important to keep the octopus busy every day because “these sea creatures are very intelligent and can learn and even recognize faces just by watching”.
The Timmendorfer octopus lady will probably not answer to her name, but she should get one. Proposals can be submitted by e-mail to [email protected] with the keyword “octopus” up to and including Sunday 6 February. Whoever suggests the most beautiful and most appropriate name wins a family ticket for the Sealife Center. The legal process is excluded.
