Britain to avoid bloodshed in Ukraine, Britain asks Putin to ‘step down’

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Prime Minister English Boris Johnson ask the President Russia Vladimir Putin to withdraw from the border conflict Ukraine. This will be presented at a meeting held this week.

This was conveyed by a spokesman for Johnson’s government office, Downing Street, without specifying the time of Boris Johnson’s talks with Vladimir Putin.

“PM Johnson will emphasize why Russia should step down and resort to diplomatic means when he talks to President Putin this week,” they said.

Downing Street also said Johnson was determined to speed up diplomatic efforts to avoid bloodshed in Europe. Johnson is also said to be visiting the region in the next few days.

This week, Johnson warned that Western sanctions against Russia would be “more severe than anything” seen earlier if Moscow decided to invade Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the UN Security Council, including Britain, will hold a general meeting on Monday (31/1) to discuss the Ukraine tensions.

Relations between Russia and the West are at their worst since the Cold War. Relations between the two soured after Moscow decided to station thousands of their troops on the Ukrainian border.

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss also said that Russia was in danger of entering a very ‘dangerous’ situation if it attacked Ukraine.

“An invasion will only lead to dangerous situations and death, like in the Soviet-Afghan war and the conflict in Chechnya,” Truss said, as quoted by AFP.

Truss also warned that a Russian invasion could bring “severe consequences” in the form of Western sanctions on the financial sector and individuals.

Britain is one of the Western countries that sends lethal weapons, such as anti-tank missiles, to Ukraine.

“We have taken the decision to support Ukraine with a light anti-armour defense weapon system,” said British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace.

Following the US, Britain has often pressured Russia not to attack Kiev.
