The US independent government agency, National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), which enforces labor law, has sued e-commerce company Amazon for allegedly threatening and surveilling employees who want to form a union in New York.
Workers at an Amazon warehouse in the New York borough of Staten Island plan to hold a vote in the coming months on whether or not to form a union. The NLRB says there is enough enthusiasm for organizing a vote and plans to announce further steps in a meeting on February 16.
The NLRB’s indictment reads that the company has “repeatedly violated the law by threatening, patrolling and questioning workers at its Staten Island warehouse who campaigned to form a union.” Amazon denies the allegation. A hearing on the charges will be held on April 5.
Last year, in a warehouse in the state of Alabama, a vote was taken to form a union. At the time, not enough votes were counted for a union, but the organizers of the vote said Amazon had not followed the rules. That’s why there will be a new vote in Alabama in the coming months. The ballots will be sent out in early February, and votes will be counted in Alabama on March 28.
