Jakarta –
Apple already started scrolling iOS 15.4 First beta for developers. This update will bring many new features, one of which is the option to unlock iPhone with Face ID when wearing a mask.
This was one of the most requested features by iPhone users at the start of the pandemic as they had a hard time opening their phones while wearing masks. Moreover, the current iPhone does not have Touch ID which can be another option to unlock the device.
Apple says this feature will recognize a unique area around the eye for authentication. If the user chooses to enable this feature, they will have to re-scan their face for Face ID.
This option can be accessed via the Settings app. Look for the ‘Use Face ID with a Mask’ toggle to turn it on or off, and there’s a new feature for ‘Add Glasses’ to make Face ID more accurate when wearing masks and glasses.
Apple warns that this feature will not work if the user is wearing sunglasses. The Face ID feature will also be more accurate if it is used to recognize all parts of the face, so the accuracy will be lower if the face is covered by a mask.
In addition to opening iPhone, Face ID with a mask can also be used to authenticate Apple Pay payments. This feature can also be used for logins and passwords in applications that support Face ID, as quoted from MacRumors, Saturday (29/1/2022).
Unfortunately not all iPhone users can take advantage of this new feature. This new feature only works for new iPhones and iPads such as the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, as Apple reasons this feature requires more resources.
But iPhone 11, iPhone X, or iPhone XS users don’t need to be discouraged. Last year, Apple rolled out a feature that allows users to unlock iPhone with the help of Apple Watch. This feature is part of the iOS 14.5 update.
For iPhone users who don’t have an Apple Watch, Apple also brings a feature that can detect if the user is wearing a mask and the iPhone will immediately ask to enter a passcode to unlock it. This feature rolled out with iOS 13.5.
