Established as a model (to be followed and duplicated) of cross-border collaboration, the P + R of Metzange has seen its image crumble since its inauguration on February 15, 2021. Co-financed by French communities and Luxembourg, a first in this area, this park-and-ride first had to set the pricing conditions for its access.
A preferential rate (€10, the monthly subscription), initially exclusively reserved for citizens of Portes de France, has been extended to residents of Val de Fensch. A first controversy quickly mastered, which presaged, we observe afterwards, the common will of the presidents Pierre Cuny and Michel Liebgott to unite the destinies of their interco by 2026.

350 subscriptions in January
Another point of contention likely to disturb its rise to power: the service of border bus lines piloted by a Luxembourg operator. Uninspired in its timing, the Vandivinit company had significantly reduced the rate of its stopovers in the Thionvillois car park at the start of the school year. Something to tense the users gathered under the banner of the Usag’ThiFensch collective. And melt the nest egg of subscribers to 250 monthly subscriptions last October. “The intervention of Pierre Cuny with the Luxembourg Minister of Transport, François Bausch, made it possible to solve the problem”, insists Pierrick Grall, close adviser to the president of Portes de France.
As promised, the Grand-Ducal carrier reviewed its copy in mid-December. The crux of the problem, line 300, departing from the city center of Thionville, once again observed a stop at the P + R: “This has greatly appeased users, we have hardly received any feedback expressing any dissatisfaction since that date. », certifies Pierrick Grall.
There remains the central question of the occupancy rate of the facility with 850 parking spaces. On a daily basis, the site does not suffer from traffic jams. A fact that the chief of staff does not dispute: “On the other hand, we returned to a more than satisfactory number of subscribers with, on average, 350 cards issued in January”.

A bypass
If the P + R seems very bald, it is mainly due to an X factor well anchored in the daily life of cross-border workers since the start of the health crisis: “Teleworking. Its extension has an impact. Not to mention that the latest wave of Omicron is causing workers to avoid public transport”. The argument stands.
The agglomeration will therefore not draw a premature assessment of this first year of operation. The time does not lend itself to it. On the other hand, it can keep the hope to attend the take-off of the site in the near future. The start of work on the future High Level Service Bus (BHNS), as well as the continuation of the development work on the Right Bank, will increase traffic density in the city centre. And further congest the parking areas near the station. As such, the P + R of Metzange should be seen as a ready-made bypass to reach the neighboring country.
