Emergency regulation for Budel asylum seekers’ center after stabbing incidents

Mayor Van Kessel of the municipality of Cranendonck has immediately announced an emergency ordinance for the site of the asylum seekers center in Budel and the surrounding area. The measure was instituted due to a series of violent incidents and will be in effect until at least mid-February, it reports Eindhovens Dagblad.

In recent months, there were six reports of violence with stabbing weapons within the asylum seekers’ center. Last week two men were still injured in a stabbing incident. Three brothers, aged 15 and 18, were subsequently arrested. Earlier in the day there was a fight in the asylum seekers’ center.

Van Kessel has consulted with the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers. “The responsibility for safety lies with COA. They must ensure a safe living environment and come up with solutions,” he told the newspaper. Talks are planned next week with King’s Commissioner Ina Adema and State Secretary for Asylum and Migration, Eric van der Burg.

By setting up the emergency ordinance, everyone in the area can be searched as a preventive measure. A procedure is also underway to make the asylum seekers’ center and its surroundings a security risk area. The Public Prosecution Service has yet to make a decision on this.
