The intrigue over whether the current Italian prime minister and former European Central Bank governor, Mario Dragi, could become the country’s next president remains.

Dragi himself has given contradictory signals about his readiness to run.

The influential politician Silvio Berlusconi is opposed to Dragi moving to the presidency because he believes he should remain in the prime minister’s chair.

Mr Berlusconi himself resigned as head of state, saying the right had to nominate another joint candidate.
