Health reports 42 deaths from COVID-19, the highest number reported in the same day

In an unprecedented event, the Health Department reported today, Saturday, 42 new deaths from COVID-19 among people ages 40 to 101, according to the agency’s preliminary report.

It is the first time that Health reports more than 40 deaths in the same day. The statistics do not mean that all the deaths occurred in the past 24 hours, but rather that they are reported as the agency refines the data through the BioPortal.

The figure reported today brought to 354 the number of deaths that have been reported on the island so far in January as a result of the omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The island is currently averaging 16 deaths per day. In addition, the cumulative total of deaths since the emergency began in March 2020 until today is 3,673.

“For the health of everyone in Puerto Rico, whoever has not been vaccinated should get vaccinated and whoever does not have the booster should get it,” the governor wrote. Peter Pierluisi on his Facebook account in the face of the record number of deaths from the virus.

The agency detailed through a tweet that 16 of the deceased were not vaccinated, 19 were only vaccinated with two doses, and seven had received their booster dose. However, the agency stated that Victims of the virus suffered from chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular and kidney diseases, lung deficiencies and Alzheimer’s.

The regions of residence of the deceased were: Bayamón, Fajardo, Mayagüez, Ponce, Caguas, Arecibo and the metro area. These last three regions were the ones that registered the most deaths, according to this report.

Regarding fatalities by vaccination status, the Secretary of Health, Carlos Mellado, has clarified on several occasions that the number of deaths is higher in people vaccinated with two doses than in unvaccinated people because the majority of the population is inoculated, so “proportionally, the number will be higher.”

Likewise, the BioPortal details that the average number of deaths of unvaccinated people for every 100,000 -in a period of 30 days- it is 20.69; in the case of vaccinated (with two doses) is 12.10; and refering to vaccinated with booster doses is 4.97.

In total, they have been reported in the last 30 days:

140 deaths of unvaccinated people out of a population of 676,812.

202 deaths of vaccinated people (partially, without the booster dose) out of a population of 1,652,301 (this population number is constantly changing, as people reach the time they are eligible to receive the booster).

43 deaths of people vaccinated with the drug booster, out of a population of 864,581 (this population figure is constantly changing, depending on the number of people receiving that dose).

On the other hand, Health reported that total hospitalizations for the virus dropped to 791, figure broken down into 744 who are adult patients and 47 pediatric.

Among the minors, there are three confined in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), one of them connected to an artificial respirator.

Meanwhile, among adult patients there are 128 in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), of which 102 are connected to an artificial respirator.

Meanwhile, Health shared a positivity rate of 27.02%, which means that 27 out of 100 tests for the SARS-CoV-2 virus are positive.

On the other hand, the average number of confirmed cases was 1,223 and the average number of probable cases stands at 2,199.
