THE HAGUE – An 81-year-old man from The Hague has been fined 170,000 euros by the Public Prosecution Service for evading the tax. In his declaration, he and his wife would have said that they lived in Cyprus, while they were simply in the Netherlands for most of the year.

The fraudulent couple was discovered by an investigation within the so-called ‘debit-credit card project’. This involves investigating suspicious payments. It turned out that the man and woman made many payments in the Netherlands with a payment card that was linked to a foreign bank account. The tax authorities therefore assume that the couple was in the Netherlands for most of the year, instead of in Cyprus.

The couple would have lived in the Netherlands for the most part until 2018, while they have not paid any tax on this. As a result, the treasury would have lost about 340,000 euros per year.

Tax fine at the tax authorities
The couple has meanwhile concluded an agreement with the tax authorities to repay the unpaid tax money. In addition, the man pays a tax fine to the Tax Authorities, as a result of which the tax disadvantage for the Dutch state has been undone.

The couple’s wife was also initially seen as a suspect in this case. According to the Public Prosecution Service, she played only a small role in tax evasion. The case against her has therefore been dropped.
