Extrasolar Planet TOI-2180b Found, Different from Other Exoplanets?

Jupiter-like exoplanet TOI-2180b found. The distance of the planet is relatively close to Earth.

A group of astronomers and scientists unravel a new mystery. A very large planet exists in our Solar System.

According to scientists, their newest exoplanet has a relatively close distance to Earth, which is about 379 thousand light years.

Discovery of Extrasolar Planet TOI-2180b

The team of scientists managed to find the planet TOI-2180b using data collected from the NASA Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, or TESS. With TESS, they discovered exoplanets.

The way it works is by finding the smallest, repeating starlight. The light will keep the planet obscured during transit.

The planet YOI-2180b differs from other large exoplanets in that it orbits a hot star for 261 days a year. Longer than any other large gas planet outside the Solar System.

It is Three Times Bigger than Jupiter with Unique Structure

The planet TOI-2180b earned the nickname exoplanet because of its large size. In fact, the size of this gas planet is almost three times larger than Jupiter.

Besides being bigger, the material that makes up this planet is also denser. The researchers assessed, the possibility of TOI-2180b has 105 Earth masses which are elements heavier than helium and hydrogen.

Another unique thing about the exoplanet TOI-2180b is its temperature. The average temperature of this planet is 170 degrees Fahrenheit or the equivalent of 77 degrees Celsius, warmer than Jupiter and Saturn.

Because of this temperature, it certainly makes this exoplanet different from other exoplanets. The exoplanet ranks are indeed known as ice planets because of their cold temperatures.

“This is a great stepping stone between the giant exoplanets we’ve found and is colder than Jupiter and Saturn,” said Dalba, a member of the NASA research team.

Furthermore, the different temperatures are not yet understood. However, it is likely to be explored further through subsequent observations when NASA releases the James Webb Space telescope.

Further Research

The team of scientists and astronomers jointly collected the TESS data in collaboration with the Visual Survey Group.

Tom Jacob, a Planet Hunter scientist, said that the discovery and publication of TOI-2180b is a good way to show that professional astronomers and experienced researchers can work well together.

Jacob also said that he had found a twinkling light on a new planet since February 1, 2020. However, he still needs confirmation from NASA astronomers about his findings.

Furthermore, there was further research that revealed another exoplanet measuring three times larger than Jupiter.

Research is currently ongoing. In the future, the research team hopes to find rings or moons that are common in gas giant planets in TOI-2180b. (R10/HR-Online)
