Samsung finally inaugurated Exynos 2200, the first system on a chip (SoC) to use a graphics chip from AMD.
The AMD GPU used uses this architecture RDNA 2, which has features such as hardware accelerated ray tracing, as quoted by detikINET from The Verge, Tuesday (18/1/2022).
Samsung’s collaboration with AMD has actually been going on for a long time, which was first announced to the public in 2019. Then in 2021 AMD confirmed that Samsung’s next flagship SoC will use the RDNA 2 GPU.
The Exynos 2200 is built using Samsung’s proprietary 4nm EUV process, and Samsung has named the new GPU “Xclipse”. AMD also confirmed that this chip is the first chip of several AMD RDNA GPUs that will be used in Exynos SoCs in the future.
On the CPU side, the Exynos 2200 uses ARMV9 cores in a “flagship core” Cortex-X2, three Cortex-A710, and four efficient Cortex-A510 cores. Then the new NPU used is promised to have twice the performance of its predecessor, and the ISP (image processor) used supports camera sensors up to 200MP, one of which is the Isocell HP1 sensor that Samsung released last year.
Usually, this latest flagship Exynos will be used in the latest Galaxy S, except for the variants released in the United States that use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon SoC. But there are also manufacturers like Vivo that use Exynos chips in some of their cellphones.
The Galaxy S22 is predicted to launch at the Galaxy Unpacked 2022 event which will be held on 8 February. Meanwhile, pre-orders in South Korea will open a day after its release, which is February 9, and sales begin on February 24.
Samsung itself is likely to announce three new phones, namely the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and Galaxy S22 Ultra. All three models will carry the Exynos 2200 chipset (and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in some countries).
The Galaxy S22 Ultra is predicted to be the “successor” of the Galaxy Note series by carrying the S Pen stylus that is integrated with the phone body. This top variant will also be equipped with a curved screen, a 5,000 mAh battery, and four rear cameras with a 108 MP main camera.
