It cannot be determined whether the man who killed Peter Stolzenbach in Den Bosch last August, had psychosis. That is what experts said on Tuesday in the courtroom in Den Bosch. The death of Stolzenbach, known and loved in Den Bosch, caused a lot of grief in the city. At the time of the accident, the suspect from Geldrop was driving a car that he had previously carjacked, so robbed.
According to his lawyer, 43-year-old Hugo H. was in psychosis when he caused the accident. He would have lived under the delusion that he was being chased by people who wanted to kill him. Earlier it became clear that the man was released from a psychiatric hospital three days before the accident.
Whether he was actually psychotic or not is very important in this case. It determines to what extent Hugo H. was accountable and that in turn determines the amount of the sentence.

Hugo H. first had an accident with his own car in Erp that Sunday morning, August 1. He left the damaged car behind and forced the driver of a Range Rover to stop. He then took off in that car.
He also caused an accident with the Range Rover, this time in Den Bosch. On the Hervensebaan, H. drove through a red light at high speed and collided with another car. The driver of it, the 50-year-old Peter Stolzenbach from Bossche, died as a result.
A report from the NIFP (Netherlands Institute for Forensic Psychiatry and Psychology) was discussed at the court in Den Bosch on Tuesday. A psychiatrist and psychologist say they cannot determine that Hugo H. was in psychosis at the time of his flight and accident. They do say that he has a disorder, which would make him less accountable in any case.
‘Horrible’
Hugo H., who is in prison in Vught, was present at the trial via a video link. He spoke to the relatives who were sitting in the room via the webcam. “It still hurts me every day that I caused them this grief,” he says. “It is and remains just awful.”
The trial continues on March 8.
