Samantha Steenwijk became known in the Netherlands thanks to her participation in The Voice of Holland in 2017. As a former candidate, she added RTL Boulevard her views on the allegations of sexual abuse and abuse of power that came out on Saturday. It didn’t go down well.
Steenwijk said she had already heard rumors of misconduct behind the scenes, from people dating candidates to promise them that they would progress through the round. She added that she “didn’t experience this at all”.
Moments later, she clearly questioned the stories. The Dutch singer pointed to the “attraction of artists”. “It was perhaps also simply because a candidate finds it interesting to sleep with an artist, because of course we have that very often”, it sounded. “The stories are of course also of the secretary with the director.”
According to her, no bad things could have happened during the recordings or rehearsals. “You are given a schedule and it says: ‘You have to be there from 1 to 5 pm today.’ You are not free for a second! If things like this have to have happened already, it seems to me very strongly that it happened during recordings or rehearsals.”
Steenwijk also thought that the case should not be blown up. “It’s not just that this The Voice happens. I feel so bad now The Voice is blamed. I have only experienced it as a wonderfully beautiful program and a great springboard.”
Victimblaming
Steenwijk came under fire after her statements. According to many viewers, the singer engaged in victimblaming, blaming the victims. In addition, she downplayed the matter.

Excuses
On Monday evening, the singer shared an apology on her Instagram Story. “I’m sorry if my words came across the wrong way,” she wrote. “What I meant is that I myself was not approached in a wrong or unpleasant way and that I also do not know or knew what experiences other candidates and/or employees have had with regard to any form of sexually transgressive behavior and abuse of power.” Steenwijk writes that she is very sad for all the victims and hopes that the investigation will provide more clarity.
