They said goodbye to the championship, their final placement will be known after the end of the basic phase of the European Championships.
The Slovaks needed to beat Russia by six goals to secure their participation in the main stage group in Bratislava, but they only won once in the battle with the leader of the table, right at the beginning (1: 0). “Zborná” confirmed the season from the first two meetings and already had a good ten-goal lead at half-time.
In the second, the Russians guarded him without any problems and advanced to the quarterfinals as the group’s winners, taking two points from the duel with Norway.
The best scorer of the Slovak team was Jakub Prokop, the author of eight goals. Wingman Tomáš Urban shot seven and is already the best Slovak scorer at the European Championships with 27 accurate hits, when he overtook the current assistant coach in the national team, Radoslav Antl (21).
The Slovaks gained two points in three meetings of the basic group in Košice, when after a high loss with Norway 25:35 they defeated Lithuania in the second performance 31:26 and enjoyed their first triumph at the European championships.
The fights in the F-group will end with the evening duel of Lithuania with Norway (20.30 h). Lithuania needs to win the duel with the favored bronze defenders by at least eight goals.

Hruščák had a chance to take the lead on Kirejeva’s dazzling drive up the left, but the opportunity fizzled away as his shot went just over the bar after 2 minutes. However, the Russians equalized and a while later were given the opportunity to power up, when the Slovak team erroneously took turns and for a while played with seven men in the field. The opponent took advantage of the number and in the 7th minute he turned the score to 4: 2 in his favor.
Only then Žernovič caught in the goal with two interventions in a row, but his teammates were ineffective in the attack and after a collected goal of 3: 7 from Kornejev’s hand, coach Kukučka had to take a break. However, the Russians continued to push through the home defense too easily, and Paul’s arrival at the goal did not change anything.
After a five-goal string, the leader of the table led by nine goals 15: 6 in the 21st minute, and the Slovaks’ dream of advancement finally faded. There was practically nothing for the home team, so they had a ten-goal shortfall during the break.
In the first half, Kornejev shone in the Russian goal with nine interventions, and in the second half, the Russian coach sent Grušek to the board in the determined state. After three minutes of play, Slaninka was the first to beat him with his first hit in the match, correcting at 10:20.
However, the picture of the game did not change, the Russians clearly dominated the Košice hall and after another series of four goals in a row, after the end of Jermakov, in the 38th minute already 24:10.

Then the home team raised their heads for a while, but that was only enough to reduce the threatening difference to 10 goals – in the 49th minute it was 19:29 after the intervention of the Slovak top cannon at the championship Tomáš Urban.
The end was already completed without unnecessary nervousness in the offensive phase and the Russians easily reached a clear triumph and first place in the group, the Slovaks said goodbye to the tournament with Urban’s goal in the last minute.
Peter Kukučka, coach of the Slovak Republic: “The Russians won today quite deservedly and I congratulate them.
I am glad that in the second we got up and won it, even though the Russians had already recorded and changed. We didn’t help the goalkeeper in the match at all, the defense was disastrous. We had different goals and different dreams in the tournament and I don’t know if the boys were bound by the need to win by six goals or what the problem was, but the opponent was simply better today. “
