“We see that this form of therapy, in which patients enter an altered state of consciousness, requires a special kind of guidance,” says the Groningen professor of psychiatry Robert Schoevers. “During treatment, deeply traumatic or personal material can surface. Good guidance is essential. This must be done by accredited therapists,” continues Schoevers, head of the University Center for Psychiatry at the UMCG and chairman of a working group of psychiatrists, psychologists and brain scientists who are writing a manifesto to the government about the medical use of psychedelics.
