After 40 years in silence, a mother heard her children’s voices for the first time. At the age of 42, Siika Angelova from Tsarevo is learning to speak again, to understand how words sound, to recognize the usual noises of everyday life.
In May last year, doctors from the ENT department of UMHAT Burgas restored her hearing with cochlear implantation – an operation in which a special device is implanted in the inner ear.
“I saw Dr. Daniel Petkov on television when they started doing this operation here in Burgas. I immediately looked for him, we made an appointment and my daughter is having surgery. Now we are very, very happy that she hears “, said Siika’s mother – Milka Ivanova.
Siika lost her hearing at the age of 2 after a viral infection. In the 1980s, the possibilities of medicine went so far that doctors told the family to reconcile – their daughter would never hear or speak. She is enrolled in a school for deaf children in Plovdiv. There she learns to read, to write, to read on her lips, to understand what people are saying to her.
She marries young, gives birth to three children who are completely healthy. She doesn’t hear any of them – neither when she cries nor when she laughs, so she was always by her children’s side.
Today, Siika hears birds, her dog, traffic, car horns, music. He hears his children and mother. One of the last things in her life that made her father happy was the fact that his daughter could already hear him. He died of Kovid five months after her operation. “She was very happy and we missed her a lot. We are grateful to Dr. Petkov and Dr. Grigorova, as well as to everyone in the ward, “said Siika and her mother.
Cochlear implantation is an expensive procedure – the price of the device is about 30,000 levs, but in UMBAL Burgas is performed by the Health Insurance Fund, which covers its value. Due to the suspension of the planned operations, a waiting list is currently being drawn up. Anyone who wishes can enroll in it in order to determine whether this procedure is suitable for him, the Burgas University Hospital explains.
