Champion Eisbären Berlin suffered their third defeat in a row in the German Ice Hockey League.
The league leaders lost 2:3 (0:3, 1:0, 1:0) at the Adler Mannheim and thus the second top game within three days. Coach Serge Aubin’s team had previously lost 3-2 after extra time against EHC Red Bull Munich.
“The game was decided in the first third, that was very strong from Mannheim,” said Berlin national keeper Mathias Niederberger at MagentaSport. For Mannheim, it was only the third game this year due to the corona, all of which was won by Mannheim, who was second in the table, and further reduced the gap to Berlin.
Wolfsburg wins in Bremerhaven
Behind the Mannheimers lurk the Grizzlies Wolfsburg, who have the same number of points and who won the north duel against the Fischtown Pinguins 5: 2 (0: 0, 3: 0, 2: 2), and EHC Munich, who won 5: 1 (1: 0 , 1:1, 3:0) as expected had no problems against the Krefeld penguins.
Meanwhile, the Kölner Haie couldn’t find a way out of the crisis in the derby against Düsseldorfer EG and are stumbling towards the relegation zone without coach Uwe Krupp, who is infected with the corona virus. The Haie lost 0:3 (0:1, 0:1, 0:1) and conceded their eighth defeat in a row. The eight-time German champion will therefore still be unsuccessful in 2022 and must gradually orientate itself downwards as tenth in the table.
DEG without conceding a goal for the first time
In front of 750 spectators, the people of Cologne were much less dangerous than the DEG and received too many penalties. It was the first game of the season without conceding a goal for Düsseldorf. However, national keeper Mirko Pantkowski was hardly challenged.
Former national coach Krupp was absent from the gang for the sharks. The 56-year-old had a positive corona test before the game. The Haie will have the opportunity to take revenge as early as next Sunday. Then there will be another derby in Düsseldorf.
