Asunción: The dream vacation on the beaches of Brazil becomes a nightmare for many Paraguayans. Reports of gastrointestinal problems are coming from different areas, affecting entire families who have decided to spend the summer in the traditional tourist destinations of the neighboring country.
Cases of vomiting, diarrhea and stomach aches force holidaymakers to stay in hotels, depriving them of the full enjoyment of the days of sun, sand and sea for which they have so eagerly saved up (or in many cases owed money).
In the Facebook community “Paraguayos en Auto al Brasil” Jani Giangreco warned of the painful situation experienced there. He reported that of the family group of five he was traveling with, only one was unaffected by these complaints. “Most say it’s sea or tap water, but the truth is many here are going through the same thing,” commented Giangreco.
Intestinal viruses are more common in summer due to the rise in temperature. In fact, doctors call these cases “traveller’s diarrhea,” where dehydration can complicate the person’s health. The symptoms usually last between three and five days.
Another reason for the conditions could in fact be the water quality, which as usual in these holiday destinations is not necessarily recommended for consumption. The vital liquid is an essential element in the preparation of the tereré, which the Paraguayan vacationer does not miss either in the sun or in the shade.
In order not to get sick, the most experienced travelers on social networks give some recommendations for those who are currently vacationing in Brazil. Among other things, they advise not to drink tap water.
If there is no other option, it must first be boiled for about 20 minutes before it can be eaten later. It’s also not advisable to rinse your mouth with tap water or brush your teeth, they warn.
Likewise, this tap water should not be used to prepare ice cream for Tereré.
In her opinion, the negative experiences that Tania Barrios and her family had in Brazil had something to do with the ice cream they consumed. “We had a lot of vomiting and diarrhea. We drank mineral water. I don’t know if it could be the ice, but unfortunately it ruined the trip and vacation,” she lamented.
