Rockefeller Christmas Tree Removed in Anticipation of Weekend’s Winter Storm – NBC New York (47)

One of the many signs that the holiday season is officially behind us: Rockefeller Center’s Christmas tree is being removed.

An approaching coastal storm bringing intense gusts of wind and the possibility of some snow showers led organizers to remove the tree a day earlier than planned. The tree will be lit and available to view through Saturday night.

The 79-foot Norway spruce, covered in more than 50,000 lights in a rainbow of colors and featuring a 900-pound glass-encased star, was lit at a ceremony in midtown Manhattan reopened to the public earlier in the season .

Last year, there was no public access to the tree’s arrival at Rock Center due to the pandemic. However, during this season things changed.

The first Christmas tree was put up at Rockefeller Center by men who worked there in 1931. This year’s tree came from Elkton, Maryland, where it stood for more than 80 years in front of a family home.
