Celebrated 50 years on the throne

January 14, 1972, Denmark was in mourning. It was on this day that the people learned that their king of 25 years, King Frederik, had passed away.

50 years later, Queen Margrethe (81) mark that she has sat on the throne twice as long as his father. On Friday, it was planned for a traditional and nice celebration of the queen.

The big celebration has been moved, however. The Danish people were actually supposed to celebrate with the royal family, but these events have been moved closer to the summer.

The day started with the Minister of State, before the Danish Parliament marked the anniversary in a formal way. The Crown Prince’s family was present, along with the Queen’s sister Princess Benedict (77). Prince Joachim (52) and Princess Marie (45) had taken the trip all the way from Paris to take part in the big day.

Although the queen was in focus, there were still several symbolic details that stood out this day.

Color codes

After the royal family participated in the Folketing’s celebration, they took the trip to Roskilde Cathedral and the burial ground of King Frederik and Queen Ingrid. Three colorful wreaths were laid there: one blue, one pink and one yellow.

However, the colors of the wreaths should have one special meaning.

Each color represents the deceased royal couple’s three daughters: Blue is Queen Margrethe’s color, pink is Princess Benedict’s and yellow is Princess Anne-Marie’s (75).

It was Queen Ingrid who got the idea to give the daughters their own color when they were little. This was stated by Princess Benedict in an earlier interview Picturemagazine.

– Our mother thought the colors suited our nature, and she was absolutely right. Margrethe certainly did not match pink. The colors were repeated in our toothbrushes, cups and everything. As we got older, we were allowed to decorate our rooms in the colors, the princess said.

To this day, the colors are often reflected in the outfits. On Friday, the queen was dressed in blue and Princess Benedict in pink – in line with the colors they have always been associated with.

Appeared with medals

But it was not just the colors that were special this day. When the royal family arrived at Roskilde Cathedral, another detail had also emerged.

On the breasts of most people there was a small medal to be seen.

Sits to the last end

After half a century as queen and increasing age, it is often speculated whether she wants to retire early, or sit until death do her and the throne separate.

On Friday, the queen could answer what “everyone” is wondering.

– It has been a pleasure to have my deed, this job, which I expect to keep for as long as I live, the queen informed B.T.

When it came to her heir, Crown Prince Frederik, she strongly expressed that she did not want to influence the Crown Prince’s future role as king. On the contrary.

– He will govern differently, that is for sure. But that is also how it will be when a new generation takes over, and a man takes over for a woman, the queen continued.
