The Green District Association Mitte puts its own youth association in front of the door. A corresponding press release from the Green Youth Center was published on Thursday evening, along with a whole series of posts on Twitter. It speaks of “unprecedented abuse of power” and “attacks”, and the statement closes with the words: “We are shaken by this demonstration of power.”
Mariam Therefore, spokeswoman for the Green Youth Berlin and also active in Mitte, said: “We will not let it get us down!” The district association itself also confirmed the process on Thursday evening via Twitter, but restricted that it was a “temporary return” of the keys.
The dispute goes back to a resolution in the district assembly that was prevented in mid-December by votes from the Greens parliamentary group, among others. There, the left-wing faction had submitted an application for the implementation of the referendum “Deutsche Wohnen und Co. expropriate”.
According to the Green Youth, there was a parliamentary group vote within the Öko-Party to support the application. In turn, several members of the parliamentary group abstained in the secret ballot. The motion failed to get a majority.
Members of the Green Youth vented their anger about this via Instagram. That same evening, they published a photo showing the slogan “DW Expropriate Now” sprayed on the sidewalk in front of the district office. The post was commented on with the words: “Who betrayed us? social democrats. Who was there? parts of the green party.”

While the party youth put the withdrawal of the key in direct connection with this post, the district association gave other reasons in its “correction”.
On the evening of December 16th – the day of the BVV meeting – the street floor in front of the door was “dirty with spray” and the district office was “left dirty”. The association made it clear that access to the district office was “guaranteed at all times” for the Green Youth – which they firmly denied.
The dispute is part of a whole series of differences that recently shook the district association. The background is, among other things, clashes between the various currents within the party, recently even the Realos, which are traditionally strong in the middle, split into two groups. The Greens’ state board now wants to mediate in the dispute in a timely manner.
