Washington DC lives the prelude to a great winter storm

This Friday, January 14, Washington DC is experiencing a winter storm that predicts an extremely cold weekend, the authorities request to take precautions for the mixture of snow and water on Sunday, which will mean a clear worsening of conditions.

A particularly strong storm is expected on Sunday that is estimated to reach the I-95 corridor, including Fairfax and Montgomery counties.

The context: Temperatures are averaging in the 40s Fahrenheit this Friday and are somewhat above normal. However, gusts of wind make the wind chill drop to 35°.

  • Gusts fluctuate between 30 and 35 km/h and have been common since midday. The forecast ensures that they will remain until the night, when temperatures drop even more.

And now that?: The cooler air will give a stronger push this Friday night. In strong winds, you’ll feel it if you’re outside, so be prepared for cold weather. There will surely be few, if any, clouds.

  • The lows will be mostly in the upper middle numbers and the 20° Fahrenheit. The wind chill will occur about 10° centigrade below the air temperature.
  • Saturday the 5th will be one of those days where everything will look clearer, but it won’t feel that way. The sunlight will be there, but it just won’t do much. In fact, the measurements will be below zero.
  • The highest temperatures on Saturday will be in the 20s or near 30s Fahrenheit and the winds will come from the north, averaging 10 km/h.

The last: On Sunday the snow will move across the region from south to north between mid-afternoon and early evening (the exact timing is still coming into focus, but has had a tendency to project a little later).

  • Snow on January 16 may be “moderate” to “heavy” for a brief period across the area before an overnight winter mix begins and this should change to overnight rain.
  • It seems likely that there will be enough freezing precipitation to make travel dangerous during the day and at night.
  • Temperatures should remain below freezing for much of the day, but are expected to gradually rise Sunday night.
