Comic book hero Spider-Man has broken an auction record. A single page from a comic book in which the superhero wears his black costume for the first time has been auctioned for nearly $3.4 million. Auction house Heritage Auctions speaks of the most expensive single page from a comic ever.

It concerns page 25 of the album ‘Secret Wars No. 8’ from 1984. It shows Spider-Man posing for the first time in a black and white suit, instead of his more famous red and blue costume. The bidding started at $330,000, but ended at a hefty $3.4 million. Page 24 of the same book went to a new owner at the same auction for 288,000 dollars (about 252,000 euros). It is not known who the new owner is.
Heritage Auctions “couldn’t be happier,” says comic book art director Joe Mannarino. The sale, he says, proves that comic book art is “as beloved and valuable as anything put on canvas.”
The previous most expensive comic book page came from a 1974 issue of ‘The Incredible Hulk’, on which superhero Wolverine made his debut. That page yielded more than 657,000 dollars (almost 575,000 euros) in 2014. Last September, the comic book in which Spider-Man made his debut was auctioned for a record amount of 3.6 million dollars (more than 3 million euros). It was the most expensive comic book ever sold at the time.
