According to the virologist, it is still too early to compare the coronavirus to a flu, something that happens in Spain is already happening. According to him, the current omikron wave ensures that the infections continue to rise and with it the pressure on hospitals. “Omikron can still cause serious illness, you see that especially in unvaccinated people,” he says.
Increasingly strong immunity
Although the infection figures are now through the roof, Van Gucht sees a more rosy future. “I think we are going to have a very nice spring and a very nice summer.” The virologist does expect that we will again face a period of uncertainty in the autumn and winter, but according to him that will also improve every year because our immunity will become stronger and stronger. According to him, the risks of the pandemic will gradually disappear, but at the moment there is still ‘too much uncertainty’ for that.
