Some of the cancer patients receive irinotecan. This medicine can sometimes cause severe side effects. The Eindhoven Catharina Hospital has come up with something for this, a DNA test.
This test can map a person’s metabolism. This will show whether the body can break down irinotecan properly or not. When a patient has a mutation in the so-called UGT1A1 gene, he or she cannot break down the drug properly. This has serious and sometimes even life-threatening consequences.
‘Saving pain’
According to the Catharina Hospital, about one in ten patients with colon or pancreatic cancer has the mutation in the genes. “These patients have been helped just as well with a lower dose of irinotecan,” says hospital pharmacist and principal researcher Maarten Deenen of the Catharina Hospital. “Doing a DNA test in advance can therefore save a lot of pain and costs.”
Dosage
The Eindhoven hospital wants to make a DNA passport to easily map out what kind of metabolism the patient has. By taking a tube of blood or saliva, the hospital can see how patients will respond to different medications. “On the basis of that profile, I can prescribe the correct dose,” says oncologist Geert-Jan Creemers of the Catharina Cancer Institute.
The research is also being conducted at Erasmus MC, Haga Hospital and the Leiden University Medical Center. Van Deelen expects that the DNA test will soon be used internationally as a standard procedure.
