(Inter – Juventus 2-1 eeo) It was a Derby d’Italia that stank of penalty shootout – up to 120 minutes and two seconds were played. Then Alexis Sánchez (33) decided with the last kick of the match.

The VG + Sport-send the supercup final between last season’s league winner Inter and cup champion Juventus thus ended 2-1 to the Milan club at home to Giuseppe Meazza. An old Manchester United combination secured Simone Inzaghi the first trophy as Inter boss and Inzaghi’s third title as coach of the Italian Super Cup:
Matteo Darmian threw himself into a duel with Juventus’ captain veteran Giorgio Chiellini and knotted the ball on to Alexis Sánchez. Striker Ole Gunnar Solskjær sent out of Old Trafford pushed himself in front of Daniele Rugani, finished safely in the short corner behind Juventus goalkeeper Mattia Perin and tore off his jersey in the jubilation scenes that followed. Both Darmian and Sánchez were on the field as substitutes for supercup specialist Inzaghi. As a Lazio coach, he won the tournament in both 2017 and 2019.
Juventus could hardly start the match again before it was over. Both in the second half and the extra innings, there were few chances, even though Inter had a tiny game-wise advantage as the “Italy derby” went towards the final signal. It did not help that the trophy guarantor Massimiliano Allegri roared energy into the Juventus players during the break between the extra innings. His ability to correct the skewed Juventus season, where they are 11 points behind leading Inter, disappeared with the Chilean’s match-winning score.
Instead, goalkeeper captain Samir Handanovic lifted the trophy accompanied by fireworks and champagne splashes.
