The water level rose precipitously. For fear of seeing the Garonne overflowing, the town hall evacuated the 720 students from the Daniel Faucher residence.
The waters are still raging. Opposite the red brick buildings of student resident Daniel Faucher, located on Ramier Island, the Garonne is bubbling up. In front of its historic level of 4.30 meters, students watch, dumbfounded, the river carrying trunks, rubbish and dwellings of fortunes.
Suitcase and bag in hand, they return from a special night. This Monday at 6 pm, the 720 residents of the 8 buildings received an email telling them to evacuate the premises before 8 pm, the risk of flooding being high. “With other people, we toured the residence to ensure that no inhabitant remains. I went to stay with friends for the night, ”says Thomas, a student at Toulouse Jean-Jaurès University.
The town hall provided care for 120 students, who were therefore forced to attend a gymnasium in the city.
Back home
This Tuesday morning, they were dozens to return to their accommodation. “The night was short. We ate at 10 p.m. in the gym. The lights came on at 6.30 am Some had to go to their faculty in order to pass the exams… ”, says Cécile, in a hurry to find her apartment.
At around 11 a.m., a new message landed in their mailbox. Access to their residence is by foot. Under the iron bridge which leads there, the brown water of the Garonne is only a few tens of centimeters from the asphalt. “It was a crazy night. I still want to thank all the people who provided our support. We lacked nothing… except information, ”laughs Emilio. The Garonne has started to decline. The situation of these students should return to normal in the coming hours.
