Last week, the number of newly discovered cases of Covid-19 in Latvia almost doubled

Last week, from 3 to 9 January, the number of newly detected cases of Covid-19 increased by 93.7%, the Agency for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC) informed LETA.

According to the SPKC, the number of inpatients has increased by 50.3% in the last seven days, with an average of 71 hospital admissions per day. At the same time, a significant number of patients with severe disease remain.

Last week, an average of 10,220 tests were performed per day, while an average of 1,547 new cases were detected per day. Of all the tests performed, 4% were related to screening in educational institutions, and 96% – to the rest of the population. Of the positive cases of Covid-19, 2% or 267 were related to educational screening and 98% or 10,563 were to the general public.

The reproductive rate of Covid-19 infection has risen from 1.13 to 1.6 in the past week, which, according to the SPKC, shows a rapid spread of the infectious disease in the community.

Comparing the prevalence of infection per 100,000 population vaccinated, vaccinated and non-vaccinated / partially vaccinated last week, Covid-19 infection was as common in non-vaccinated / partially vaccinated people in Latvia, but 2.7 times less common in those who had also received a booster dose.

The center recalls that as the number of vaccinees increases and the prevalence of Covid-19 infection continues to predominate among non-vaccinated individuals, the overall incidence of infection in vaccinated individuals will increase. However, among vaccinated people, the disease is usually milder and requires less frequent hospitalization, so the proportion of vaccinated and infected people should always be seen in the context of the number of Covid-19 cases prevented by vaccination in the general population.

The average for the European Union and the European Economic Area fell from 818.9 to 785.4 during the week. The 14-day cumulative rate of Covid-19 incidence per 100,000 population in Latvia is currently 518, compared to 497.3 a week ago.

In Estonia, this indicator increased from 640.2 to 807.8 last week, while in Lithuania – from 737.2 to 774.1.

In the period from the penultimate week to the first week, the most common patients in Latvia came from Great Britain (148), Italy (93), France (55), Spain (55), Sweden (52), Egypt (47), Germany (45), Denmark ( 42), Finland (39), USA (33), United Arab Emirates (31), Norway (31), Estonia (27), Hungary (26), Russia (23), Poland (23), Lithuania (21).
