Discover the most popular games on Twitter in 2021

Now is the time to take stock for Twitter, and the social network offers us as usual the ranking of the most tweeted games during the past year. An impressive 2.4 billion video game-related tweets were posted during 2021, a 14% increase from 2020 — including a very, very big last quarter.

Genshin in number 1

It is Genshin Impact who will have led the dance over the past year on the social network. The free-to-play hit straight out of China has grown in popularity over the years since its release in 201, becoming the game with the most tweeting over the past year. He is closely followed by Apex Legends, the ultra-popular battle royale by Electronic Arts, then by Ensemble Stars !, a rhythm game released in 2015 on mobile and for the moment only available on Japanese territory.

Final Fantasy made an appearance in fourth place — it was mostly FFXIV, the MMORPG episode, that went a long way in making the franchise one of Twitter’s most popular games. We find just after Fate/Grand Order, Sony’s mobile game, followed by Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the ultra-popular Nintendo Switch hit that is still resisting. It is followed by the battle royale mobile Knives Out, the eternal Minecraft, the Japanese smartphone game Project Sekai and finally Fortnite.

Video games, a Japanese passion

Other rankings are also available on the blog post Twitter—Where we learn in particular that Japan is the country tweeting the most about video games, followed by the United States and South Korea. As for France, it secures a logical ninth position, behind the United Kingdom but ahead of India. Finally, even though its format has gone completely digital since last year, E3 remains the most popular video game event on Twitter, ahead of the Game Awards and Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase.
