A disdainful yuppie ends up in a wheelchair after an accident – and ultimately in a shared apartment with mentally and physically disabled people. The comedy is ideally suited to the subject of “living with a disability”.

Oliver (Tom Schilling) can feel close again to his wealth, which he thought was lost. The disdainful yuppie owes this to an unusual group of bullies. He’s running out of comparisons with enthusiasm. Avengers, the A-Team … We’re better, he thinks. “We are the B-Team,” explains Franzi (Luisa Wöllisch). You are in the best sense of the word. The “B” not only stands for “people with disabilities”, but also for “hilariously”. The situation comedy “Die Goldfische” can strain the laughing muscles to the point of breathlessness. SAT.1 is now showing the film on free TV for the first time.

Here the audience is not amused by the characters, but with them – that is the common formula for explaining why some comedies are allowed and able to deal with very serious topics in a funny way. This time the case is a little different. The targets of ridicule are everyday dull and stupid things that are as unpleasant as they are lovable. And the handicapped tend to do better than the supposedly “normal” people.

After an overly daring overtaking maneuver, said investment advisor Oliver ends up paraplegic in a wheelchair. While still in the rehabilitation center, he tries to reintegrate into professional life. The search for a reasonably satisfactory W-LAN reception leads him to the premises of the “Goldfische”, a flat-sharing community for mentally and physically disabled people. Carer Eddy (Kida Khodr Ramadan), “Rainman” Rainer (Axel Stein) and, last but not least, Franzi want to watch his screen with you.

A crazy bus trip to Switzerland
For Laura (Jella Haase), the supervisor of the goldfish, Oliver is considered a poor sausage. Quibbles like: “I’m not a banker – I’m a portfolio manager” don’t get caught in her. And then the German tax office also wants Oliver’s assets in Switzerland. The fact that blind Magda (Birgit Minichmayr) is pitying no one controls during her supermarket raids gives Oliver the idea of buying therapy in Zurich and using this opportunity to smuggle his money home.

The big hour for director and screenwriter Alireza Golafshan will come in Switzerland. The chaotic troop on the bus in the direction of Zurich – that makes for a crazy concatenation of absurd exacerbations, turbulent pirouettes and bold attempts to get hold of the money in the safe deposit box. Golafshan’s variations of the basic situation never seem schematic. Whatever he plays through – blind or obsessive-compulsive neurotics at the wheel, an unequal fight between Eddy and Oliver in the vault: It is as if seen for the very first time and it is diaphragmatic.
–
The influence of money on the “goldfish” is definitely noticeable. The small crowd threatens to implode in sudden greed. Trying to defend “his” possessions makes Oliver painfully aware of his helplessness. The insight into the touching faintheartedness of the actors creates a wonderful balance, be it Oliver’s ridiculous arrogance or Franzi’s wish – played by Luisa Wöllisch, an actress with Down’s syndrome – to want to be Helene Fischer instead of Wonder Woman.
