Mulhouse, the ideal place to combine employment and accommodation

The employment specialist Meteojob and the broker Meilleurtaux.com have combined their know-how to establish a ranking of French cities offering both a dynamic employment pool and an affordable price per square meter.

The initiative is interesting to say the least. While many French people have chosen or are considering leaving large metropolises and city centers to afford a better living environment with more space in particular, Meteojob and Meilleurtaux.com had the idea of joining forces to define a list of cities that best reconcile employment and housing. To do this, on the basis of a 20-year real estate loan, the median salaries offered in the advertisements referenced by Meteojob were compared with the interest rates recorded by Meilleurtaux.com and the price of the local asset. .

Orleans and Dijon on the podium

At the time of a change of life, unsurprisingly, cities of intermediate sizes are the most popular with all these French people in search of renewal. While some offer good job prospects and others attractive prices per square meter, several of them manage to combine both. First in this ranking, Mulhouse is the most attractive with 6.29% of CDI offers per 100 inhabitants and workers able to acquire, on average, a home of 83 m2.

The city of Haut-Rhin is followed by Orleans, in the Loiret, which compensates for a higher price per square meter (2,601 euros, or an accessible area of ”only” 69 m2) by a volume of supply per 100 inhabitants much higher (7.22). The podium is completed by Dijon. The Côte-d’Or prefecture has seen its employment opportunities multiply by 12 in one year, according to Meteojob, making this an extremely dynamic city with a ratio of 6.47 jobs per 100 inhabitants. Its price per square meter amounts to 2,670 euros and allows the acquisition of a property of 57 m2.

Cities with more than 200,000 inhabitants lagging behind

Taking a little more height on this ranking which lists 31 cities, note that it is in Toulon that the number of offers per 100 inhabitants is the lowest (2). In terms of prices per square meter, the gap extends from 1,487 euros (Saint-Étienne) to 11,377 euros (Paris). Last of this list, the capital logically offers the smallest accommodation (17 m2) unlike Perpignan which dominates this item with 111 m2 potentially to be acquired.

New proof of the disaffection of the big cities, Lille is the first city of more than 200,000 inhabitants classified and only points to the 15e rank. Bordeaux (17e), Rennes (18e), Nantes (21e), Strasbourg (24e), Toulouse (25e), Lyon (26e), Marseille (28e), Montpellier (29e), Nice (30e) and Paris (31e) are clearly lagging behind.
