At the end of the 2021 call, carried out by the General Directorate of Educational Materials of the SEP, 200 illustrations were chosen, of which 26 and two photographs were submitted by 27 minors, between 10 and 15 years old. Their proposals were considered and are contained in the new Free Textbooks that are used in the current 2021-2022 school year.
The head of Education, Delfina Gómez Álvarez, has pointed out that those who participated in the redesign of the books did so with great love and demonstrated their talent, which makes them original and unique beings that deserve recognition.
Among the students who participated, there are many stories of interest, since each one of them sought to capture their concerns, tastes and mainly their dreams.
Natalia, 11 years old, whose work can be seen on page 211 of the Fourth Year book, commented: “It is very important that our participation is allowed, since we have talent, and the fact that our drawings are in the books encourages others to do what we like ”. For this reason, he tells the girls and boys that nothing is impossible.
Originally from the community of Quilá, in the municipality of Culiacán, Sinaloa, and who likes history, is knowledgeable about the life of Vincent van Gogh, in addition to graphic design and architecture, she could not believe that his work is part of the textbooks and that all fourth graders will appreciate. “These books are owned by all the children of Mexico, that’s why it seemed to me something very gigantic, very extraordinary.” express.
Natalia, a student at the José María Michell primary school, located in the community of Oso Nuevo, affirms that this call has been of great importance, both for her and for many children in Mexico.
Passionate about drawing the landscapes of Mexico, she says that winning the contest encourages her to keep going and learn new things every day, and even to do “something even bigger than this.” Therefore, he dreams of being an artist.
Natalia, who is self-taught in her artistic training, and passionate about art and history books, invites girls and boys to read: “A fundamental part is to encourage reading, it is a time of a lot of technology, because children have lost interest in it, but it will always be very important to read a book ”.
Natalia’s illustration shows a group of girls and boys, gathered together and enjoying reading; With this drawing, she also exposes the value of inclusion, since one of her friends is in a wheelchair.
José Francisco, an adolescent passionate about the traditions of his town, San Francisco Tlaltenco, in Tláhuac, as well as the carnivals and the patron saint festivities, managed to make his illustration part of the textbook of Native Language (Spanish) of Third grade of primary , work of which he is proud.
He asks the SEP to continue with these actions for the benefit of Mexican children and education, because in the end that is the objective, he also suggests that they value books. “It is the Mexican people who are giving them these books,” he says.
He says that the success of his illustration, which can be seen on page 175 of the book, is due to the support of his family who have always been by his side, motivating him to do good things for himself and for others. He even affirms: he sees himself as the president of Mexico.
He feels very proud of his participation in this call, because, “contributing with my thought, with my idea, in a book that the children of Mexico are going to see, I feel that it is very important.” For this reason, the young man from Tláhuac has not only participated in this call.
For example, in a call launched by the Collective Transport System, Metro designed a mask with the image of the god Tláloc, to travel safely due to the pandemic.
José Francisco assures that the school is the place that brings together the efforts of adults and children, the guide, the one that articulates and disseminates values. In addition, proud of his roots, he comments that his illustration is the image of his people, of their traditions and asks the girls and boys to feel part of their communities: “That they feel part of Mexico and serve Mexico.”
Winner of the 2018 Knowledge Olympiad, which took him to Cancun to discover the sea for the first time, he exposes that it is valid that young people want to leave their communities, which they should not forget and, when they are successful, return to help overcome the difficulties that they themselves had and that forced them to leave.
For her part, the student Banshee, managed to make her illustration part of the Maternal Language (Spanish) textbook on page 109, of third grade of primary school, of which she feels very proud and commented that it is an honor to see her dream come true, since at times, he has received comments contrary to his creative work: “you will not achieve anything if you study art”.
Winner, when she was 9 years old, of a book and a puzzle in a magazine contest, she is also a reader of Gabriel García Márquez, Joana Marcos and Stephen King.
For this reason, she seeks to encourage more young people with her creative work: “for those who want to dedicate themselves to art; Do not let it, for me it is the best way to express myself and capture an idea ”, which can sometimes be through drawing, painting, or it can be through literature, but never stop your aspirations, he commented .
A student from Escuela Nacional Preparatoria Number 3 and resident of the Gustavo A. Madero mayor’s office, in Mexico City, she says that it is a great honor to see her illustration in textbooks and thus fulfill a dream, because since she was a child she wanted to draw and dedicate herself to art: “Since I was little, when I saw the murals, I said, I want to do that, I want to get to express my ideas so great.”
In his social networks, where he pours his opinions about art, Banshee comments that barriers that affirm that nothing is achieved by studying art should be ignored, and he makes a comment as advice: “do not accumulate, like volcanoes, that little by little they accumulate until they explode. They better be a mega explosion of success and fulfill everything that they thought they were going to be ”.
She adds that in 20 years she sees herself as an artist and graphic designer. For this reason, this call from the SEP has been a great incentive, since “at first I did not dimension it, until later I dropped the twenty, that my illustration is in a book that all third-year children will use. primary”.
Being in one of the textbooks caused him so much emotion and he expressed it this way: “It made me remember when I was in elementary school, and what it was like to pick up your books, stand in line and run back to the classroom. see illustrations ”.
The textbooks also have illustrations of minors Ana Paula, Ángel, Ángela, Britani, Carolina, David, Dulce, Jennifer, Jesús, Karime, Kenia and Madison.
In addition, in the books there are also works by Marcela María, María Antonieta, María Fernanda, Marianne, Nathalia Getsemani (who contributed two photos), Paulina, Raúl, Sarah Susana, Vania, Victoria Harumi, Xel-ha Cineret and Yesenia Marisol.
