A radical but authorized measure. Citigroup is preparing to lay off its employees who are not vaccinated, reports BFMTV. They have until January 14, otherwise they can say goodbye to their work. The American banking group informed them by e-mail, Friday, January 7, with this rather clear ultimatum: if you are not vaccinated, you will be dismissed immediately and without compensation. 10% of the workforce would be affected, which represents nearly 16,000 employees.
The bank said that each situation will be examined on a case-by-case basis, with exemptions provided for medical or religious reasons. Another American company had already taken the same measure for its unvaccinated employees. The airline United Airlines which had fired 200 employees who refused to submit to the vaccine.
In the United States, companies can mandate vaccination
As surprising as it may seem, in the United States, this measure is completely legal. Imposing vaccination and dismissing vaccine-resistant people is a right for companies. Last September, US President Joe Biden tried to pass a law to make vaccination compulsory in all companies with more than 100 employees, a text since blocked by several legal actions.
It is the Supreme Court which must now decide and, after the first debates, the judges should definitively bury this law, a failure for Joe Biden who wanted to relaunch the vaccination campaign. As a reminder, only 62% of Americans are fully vaccinated against Covid-19.
