Schools reopen after the Christmas holidays with only one in three children between the ages of 5 and 11 taking the first dose of the vaccine

The Government is committed to maximum educational presence after the Christmas holidays, when cases of coronavirus have exploded, as it considers that educational centers are “safe spaces”. The data, however, show runaway incidents of covid-19 in regions such as Navarra, the Basque Country and Castilla y León, while the first dose of the vaccine has only reached one in three children between 5 and 11 years old.

Several communities start classes this Monday with a cumulative incidence that exceeds 3,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 14 days in the population under 19 years of age, according to the latest official data from the Ministry of Health. While the average for Spain as a whole is 2,317 and 2,909 for the age groups under 11 and between 12 and 19, respectively, some regions widely exceed this incidence. In fact, Navarra shows an incidence of 6,173 for those under 12 and 8,161 for those between 12 and 19 years old. For its part, the Basque Country has 5,580 and 7,468, respectively; and Castilla y León, 3,838 and 4,533.

They also get bad marks in the accumulated incidence of covid cases in the La Rioja school population, with 3,168 and 3,282; Extremadura, with 3,037 and 4,320; Cantabria, 3,351 and 3,016; Asturias, with 2,695 and 3,335; and Catalonia, with 2,485 and 3,334, are close behind. Galicia, with 2,754 and 4,094; and Castilla-La Mancha, with 2,477 and 3,265, also exceed the national averages for these two age groups.

The return to classes after the omicron rebound at Christmas also coincides with the advance of vaccination in the child population. However, the average as of January 7 still did not reach one in three minors between the ages of 5 and 11, specifically it was 32.1%, which means that 1,076,522 children have received a first puncture out of a total of 3,349,276 who would have to receive it. Galicia, with 53.8%, Cantabria, with 45% and Asturias, with 40.9% are the regions that have given the most vaccines in percentage terms.
