Nico Sturm wins with Minnesota Wild, Moritz Seider loses with the Detroit Red Wings

Reading time: approx. 3 minutes

Washington’s goalkeeper sets an NHL record in the Minnesota defeat.

After a goalless first third, the Washington Capitals allegedly set the course for victory with two quick hits in the middle section by Connor McMichael and Jevgeni Kuznetzov in excess. But Marcus Foligno made the connection for the hosts in the second third – in a way: Because it was an own goal by Caps striker Carl Hagelin, whose pass spilled into the empty goal, while goalkeeper Zach Fucale left his job for a short time with an indicated penalty against the Wild had vacated in favor of the sixth attacker. Nevertheless, the young French-Canadian in the goal of the capital city, who also showed some spectacular saves, had reason to be happy: At the beginning of his NHL career he stayed more than 138 minutes without conceding a goal in three appearances – NHL record. Mats Zuccarello equalized for the hosts in the final minute when Wild goalkeeper Kaapo Kahkonen had left his goal for the additional outfield player. It was the tenth goal of Wild this season in six against five – league record – and already the fourth equalizer in the final minute.

In the penalty shootout, Kevin Fiala and Frederick Gaudreau made the decision in favor of Wild, who had to tell the NHL about ten players due to injuries and the Covid protocol. Nico Sturm recorded a shot on goal in twelve minutes of ice time. However, he also had to work outnumbered for almost three minutes.

Los Angeles Kings clearly win against Detroit, “Flower” is returning to Las Vegas for the first time
Yesterday evening was not very positive for Moritz Seider and the Detroit Reg Wings during their guest performance in Los Angeles. In the first third, the Californians fired 27 shots on goal – the best in franchise. Most recently, more than ten years ago, they had so many attempts on the opposing goal within a section, also against the Detroit Red Wings. The Kings were twice successful: Phlipp Danault and Drew Doughty scored for the hosts. Adrian Kempe made it 3-0 late in the middle third, Trevor Moore made it 4-0 with an empty net goal two and a half hours before the end. Moritz Seider could not set accents with just one shot on goal, Thomas Greiss had to give way to Alex Nedeljkovic in the goal of the Red Wings.

Marc-Andre Fleury made a triumphant return in Las Vegas, where he had played for four years until he was traded to Chicago last summer. Now he returned to the desert city for the first time with the Blackhawks and was greeted with a video collage before the start of the game – an emotional moment for Fleury, who played the first four seasons of the franchise that entered the league in 2017. At that time, they were the first team in NHL history to storm into the Stanley Cup final in their premier season, but lost it to the Washington Capitals.

And “Flower” also took the points from Nevada. Jujhar Khaira and Riley Stillman shot the early lead of the Vegas Golden Knights in the middle cut. They could not be denied this narrow lead, also because Marc-Andre Fleury showed strong 30 saves. It was the first victory for the ex-champion after the last five defeats in a row.

Overtime wins for the Colorado Avalanche and Florida Panthers
Colorado Avalanche made a remarkable comeback against the Toronto Maple Leafs: After a good 25 minutes they were 1: 4 behind on their own ice, but were equalized by Cale Makar, Gabriel Landeskog and JT Compher and finally won with overtime Devon Toews. The top game between the Florida Panthers and the Carolina Hurricanes was also decided in overtime: Anthony Duclair scored after a good three minutes in the extra shift to make it 4: 3 for the guests from the Sunshine State. The two teams with the highest points in the league come from Florida, because both the Panthers and Masters Tampa Bay have 51 points on their accounts.

Philipp Grubauer, Leon Draisaitl and Tim Stützle had to pause because their games were postponed, as was the game between the Montreal Canadiens and the Buffalo Sabers.

The other games of the previous night at a glance:

Tampa Bay Lightning – Boston Bruins 2:5
Philadelphia Flyers – San Jose Sharks 2:3 (OT)
