At this year’s CES, Sony unveiled its second electric car prototype, the electric crossover version of the sedan previously unveiled. Unlike in 2020, the production prospects are now much better – Sony says it wants to test the move soon.

The VISION-S 02 is a crosshair derivative of the VISION-S 01 electric sedan that was presented at CES 2020. Using the same eMobility and cloud platforms, both models focus primarily on an ‘entertainment’ interior with 5G connectivity and infotainment – e-drive is just an accessory.

In the statement on the electric crossover Sony did not go into the technical details of the drive other than the fact that it is electric. Benteler, Bosch, Continental, Magna Steyr and ZF were involved in the development. The electric car has two electric motors, which together provide 400 kW of power. Thus, the European supplier platform and electrical components form the basis on which Sony can build its expertise in sensors and security technologies for autonomous driving and the infotainment system.

The VISION-S 02 has high-resolution CMOS image sensors (cameras) to monitor the car’s surroundings and a Lidar system to capture three-dimensional space more accurately. Other features include enhanced gesture control, a low-latency 5G system and in-seat speakers designed to create a three-dimensional sound experience.
