The chairman of the House of Representatives, the Democrat Nancy Pelosi, published an invitation to her party friend to appear in the Capitol in Washington on Friday. Pelosi wrote to Biden: “Thank you for your bold vision and your patriotic leadership that have brought America out of crisis and into an era of great progress.”
Biden had already given a speech in front of both Congress Chambers on April 29 of last year – a good three months after he took office. The first address by a newly elected US president at a joint session of the House of Representatives and the Senate in the US Capitol is traditionally not referred to as a State of the Union address. In his appearance last year, Biden had conjured up an American fresh start after the era of his Republican predecessor Donald Trump.
