According to the Corona regulation of the state of Baden-Württemberg, universities must strictly control the vaccination and convalescence cards of students for on-site courses. The methods are similar, but each university has also found its own way of implementing the requirements of the state – for example, whether in the lecture hall or in front of the lecture hall, analog or digital, is controlled by temporary staff or teachers.
However, the corona checks cost a lot of money. That is why the state government wants to help the universities out again with funding in the millions. “We are now seeing that, despite the high vaccination rate, a lot of staff has to be invested, partly with companies that are hired from outside, and partly with student assistants who hire the universities,” said Science Minister Theresia Bauer (Greens) of the Germans Press agency.
The state could not count on the so-called full controls at the beginning of the winter semester. “Unfortunately, given the force of the fourth wave, things look different now and the universities are taking this into account.” The additional need for these controls is currently being calculated there. The country wants to pull the money out of the risk reserve.
However, the Corona regulation, which was adapted after a court ruling, initially has no further effect on everyday life in the pandemic in the lecture halls. “With regard to 2G in courses, not much will change at the university,” said Karl Rijkhoek, spokesman for the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen. “Students who are not immunized are still not allowed to participate.” Of course, attempts are being made to find alternatives for students who are not vaccinated or who are in quarantine, who have problems looking after their children or who have to avoid crowds due to serious previous illnesses.
The system is safe, not least because of a vaccination rate of 95 percent among students, says Rijkhoek. However, the attendance rate in many subjects is gradually crumbling. Online teaching is increasingly being used because the challenges of organizing full control are too great and the number of infections in society is too high.
