North Korea Claims to Launch Hypersonic Missile in Latest Action

PYONGYANG – The launch of missiles on Wednesday (5/1/2022) into the Sea of ​​Japan by North Korea (North Korea) using hypersonic weapons. The claim was disclosed by Pyongyang’s state media on Thursday morning (6/1/2022).

According to the Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, Wednesday’s test accelerated the task of “modernizing the national strategic force.”

“The test verified the ability of the fuel ampoule system to operate under winter weather conditions and demonstrated an improved ability to stabilize and control the hypersonic glide vehicle, which combines multi-stage glide jump flight and powerful lateral movement,” the report said.

“The launch vehicle is propelled by a rocket engine during the initial stages of a hypersonic weapon launch before releasing and launching toward its target, adopting an unpredictable flight path to avoid interception,” the report said.

“In a test launch, the (Academy of Defense Sciences) reaffirmed the flight control and stability of the missile in the active flight stage and assessed the performance of a new lateral movement technique applied to a detached hypersonic launch warhead,” Sinmun said.

“After detaching after launch, the missile made a lateral movement of 120 km within a hypersonic glide warhead flight range from the initial launch azimuth to the target azimuth and precisely hit the target 700 km away,” Sinmun said.
