Israel: Controversy Over Artist Omer Adam’s New Song

Mega pop star Omer Adam, who dominates the Spotify and Apple charts in Israel, has been at the heart of a controversy since the release of his latest single, “Kakdila”, which was deemed “racist and sexist” by several personalities Russian-Israeli and a government minister.

The song, partially sung with a fake Russian accent, is about a young Russian woman, her alcoholism, her inability to speak Hebrew well, and alludes to her sexual exploits.

Entitled “Kakdila”, which means “How are you” in Russian, the song was released for Novy God, the Russian New Year celebration.

The track is trending on YouTube, where it already has more than 5,000 comments while the singer has been criticized by public figures for the lyrics of his song.

Labor leader and Transport Minister Merav Michaeli called the song “the most vulgar three minutes”, according to Ynet.

Ms Michaeli berated the artist for stigmatizing Israelis of Russian descent rather than celebrating their culture.

“I want to believe that Omer Adam is not a bad person,” Ms. Michaeli wrote.

“I want to believe that if Omer Adam saw the girls whose lives are ended because they heard this song […] he would make it disappear. But he doesn’t believe them. He does not choose to meet them, does not see and does not face reality, “she said.

Omer Adam responded to the minister’s comments on social media, telling her that his own family is from the Caucasus, a region of former Soviet republics, and that he never intended to insult anyone. it is with a song written and performed “jokingly”.

The singer also noted that Ms Michaeli’s partner, comedian Lior Schein, once had a satirical TV show that regularly made fun of Israelis of Russian descent.

He also told him to “mind his own business” and “improve public transport in Israel”.
